How to Properly Import DXF Files in Chief Architect X17 Without Creating Single CAD Blocks

Overview

Chief Architect X17 introduced a new option during the DXF import process called "Create CAD Blocks". The "Create CAD Blocks" option is a relatively new feature introduced in Chief Architect X17.

  • If this option is enabled, you lose the ability to select individual lines within the imported drawing because it treats the import as one combined CAD block.

  • Turning this option off restores the behavior where lines and elements remain individual.

Step-by-Step Solution for Proper DXF Import

Follow these instructions to import your DXF file with individual lines instead of one block:

  1. Start Import Process
Drag and drop your DXF file into Chief Architect or use the import option.

  2. Check the Import Settings Dialog
You will see an "Import Drawing" box with various options.

  3. Turn Off "Create CAD Blocks"
In the import dialog, locate the "Create CAD Blocks" option and make sure this box is NOT checked (i.e., turn this option off).

What You Should See After Correct Import

  • You should be able to click and select individual lines or elements in your imported drawing instead of one single block.

Next: Import and Transform

  1. Import All Layers by Name
Make sure the settings for importing layers are set to import all layers and to separate them by their names. This keeps your drawing organized by layer.

  2. Confirm Other Settings
Keep "RENDR Walls," "RENDR Windows," or other relevant options as needed for your project.

  3. Complete the Import
Click OK to import your DXF file.

From here, you should be able to follow the instructions in our CAD-to-Walls tutorial!
