Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a list of FAQ's regarding features and accuracy.

Q: How accurate are the measurements from RENDR scans?

A: RENDR’s accuracy depends on the size and complexity of the space. For single rooms, measurements are typically within 1 inch. For larger or multi-room scans, there may be 2–3 inch variances in some areas. In general, RENDR delivers measurements within 1–2% of actual dimensions, which is about as accurate as mobile LiDAR scanning technology allows. Understanding how to scan properly is key to achieving the best results.

Q: What if the scan is not accurate?

A: RENDR scans are highly accurate when proper scanning techniques are followed. Most issues (like crooked walls or large discrepancies) are caused by user error, such as excessive up-and-down motion, “painting” the room, scanning in low light, or doubling back unnecessarily. Reviewing the Scanning Overview and following best practices will resolve most issues. If something still seems off, you can contact support. You can also manually adjust quantities in tools like JobTread if needed, and sharing scans with the RENDR team helps identify and resolve potential issues.

Q: We need to be accurate to the quarter-inch for our projects. How does RENDR help?

A: RENDR is typically accurate within an inch (or 1–3 inches in larger spaces), which is the limit of mobile scanning technology. Quarter-inch precision generally requires high-end stationary scanners. That said, RENDR provides a highly accurate starting point that dramatically speeds up your process. Many contractors use RENDR to capture 99% of the work, then perform a final field measure for critical dimensions after the job is sold. For best results, scanning individual rooms and exporting into CAD tools like 2020 helps preserve the highest level of accuracy.

Q: Can RENDR capture fine details like light switches and bulkheads?

A: RENDR captures overall room layout and dimensions, but it does not reliably capture fine details like light switches or small features. While it may sometimes detect soffits or bulkheads, results can vary. It’s recommended to take manual notes and measurements for any critical details during your site visit.

Q: Does RENDR automatically recognize and place objects like plumbing fixtures or furniture?

A: Yes. RENDR automatically detects and places common objects such as sinks, toilets, appliances, TVs, couches, chairs, desks, and stairs. These objects are positioned at their real-life location and scale within the floor plan. Object recognition is continuously improving over time.

Q: How does RENDR handle doors and windows?

A: RENDR captures the placement and dimensions of windows and doors, which can be viewed in the Walls tab. When exporting to CAD software, windows are included automatically. Doors are currently represented as openings (without swing direction), rather than fully detailed door objects.

Q: Can RENDR scan multiple floors or separate rooms?

A: RENDR scans one floor at a time. For multi-story projects, each floor should be scanned separately and saved under the same project. When scanning a single floor with multiple rooms, you simply walk through the space without stopping—the app maps everything in one continuous scan. You can also scan individual rooms separately and group them into a project or export them together.

Q: What kind of data does RENDR capture besides the floor plan?

A: Each scan includes detailed data across multiple tabs:

  • Walls tab: Elevations, wall dimensions, window and door placement

  • Rooms tab: Ceiling height, square footage, perimeter, and other room parameters

  • Report tab: A compiled overview of key data used for estimating

RENDR also captures detected objects like fixtures and furniture, which can be leveraged in integrations.

Q: What export options are available from RENDR?

A: RENDR offers several export options:

  • PDF: For markup and documentation

  • 2020 XML: Direct import into 2020 Design

  • DXF: Universal CAD format compatible with Chief Architect, AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, ProKitchen, and more

For best accuracy in CAD workflows, exporting a single-line DXF and manually tracing walls is recommended. Always ensure your scale settings match between RENDR and your CAD software.

Q: Can I use RENDR without other design software?

A: Yes. RENDR can be used on its own to capture existing conditions, store photos, and reference room and project data. You can also use it alongside estimating tools like JobTread without needing CAD software.

Q: Does RENDR work on Android devices?

A: No. RENDR is currently only available on iOS devices (iPhone Pro and iPad Pro models) that include LiDAR sensors. LiDAR is required to achieve RENDR’s level of accuracy. Android support is not expected until LiDAR becomes more widely available on those devices.

Q: Can RENDR scan spaces with just studs and no drywall?

A: RENDR can sometimes detect studded walls, but it performs best with finished surfaces like drywall. Scanning unfinished spaces may result in inconsistencies.

Q: Can RENDR capture angled walls, vaulted ceilings, or exterior elements?

A: RENDR captures overall geometry, including varying ceiling heights and vaulted ceilings, and provides elevation measurements for those surfaces. However, some CAD tools may have limitations when interpreting complex geometry like angled walls. RENDR is currently focused on interior scanning and does not capture exterior elements. Future updates may expand these capabilities.

Q: Can I modify the report tab in the RENDR app?

A: No. The data in the Report tab is fixed and cannot be edited within RENDR. However, once the data is sent to integrated platforms like JobTread or Buildxact, you can modify quantities there as needed.

Q: How does RENDR compare to other scanning systems like Matterport?

A: RENDR is designed for speed and workflow efficiency. Compared to systems like Matterport, RENDR enables faster scanning and quicker turnaround into usable floor plans and estimates. It also provides more structured room data for estimating and integrates directly with contractor workflows, helping users move from scan to proposal significantly faster.

Q: How do I rename a room?

A: From iOS or Web, navigate to the Rooms tab and select the Edit button. From there, you can choose the room you’d like to rename and update it. Tip: If you use integrations that leverage RENDR’s powerful room-based parameters, make sure to finalize your room names before syncing with our integration partners to ensure everything maps correctly.

Q: How do I see my Flex edits?

A: While Flex is currently in public beta, all edits you make and save still exist, but they are only viewable and exportable within the Flex environment. To access them, navigate to your space and select “Edit in Flex” on iPad or Web (iPhone coming soon). From there, you can view and export your updated plans. This is temporary—RENDR plans to release the full version of Flex in Summer 2026 with expanded functionality across the platform.

Q: Why do my measurements differ between the RENDR space details screen and Flex?

A: Flex uses a more robust and intelligent data model that enhances overall accuracy. Because of this, measurements in Flex may differ slightly from those shown in the standard RENDR space details screen, with Flex typically being more accurate. To take advantage of this improved accuracy, open your plan in Flex by selecting “Edit in Flex” and export your documents (PDF, CAD files, etc.) from there. This difference is temporary—Flex’s enhanced accuracy will be adopted across the entire RENDR platform by Summer 2026.

Q: Can I create Field Notes in RENDR Flex?

A: Not yet. Field Notes are not currently available inside Flex during the beta phase. However, this is coming soon. With the full release of Flex (planned for Summer 2026), users will have access to an upgraded Field Notes experience, including the ability to create and manage notes directly on the floor plan across both iOS and Web.

Q: Can I export photos or elevations to the PDF?

A: Not yet, but this feature is coming soon. RENDR is actively enhancing the PDF export experience to include photos and elevations, allowing for more comprehensive documentation directly within your exported plans.
