Selecting a Flooring Area
Before editing a Flooring Area:
Open the floor plan in Flex.
Enter Flooring Mode.
Select the Flooring Area you want to edit.
The selected Flooring Area displays its editable boundary and flooring information.
On iOS, dimensions are also displayed along qualifying edges of the selected Flooring Area. Very short edges under 0.2 m are not labeled.
Reshaping a Flooring Area
Use the flooring boundary when the installation needs to differ from its current shape.
To reshape a Flooring Area:
Enter Flooring Mode.
Select the Flooring Area.
Locate the boundary vertex you want to change.
Drag the vertex to the desired location.
Release it.
Review the new boundary and calculated flooring area.
RENDR recalculates the Flooring Area as its geometry changes.
If a Vertex Snaps to the Wrong Location
Flooring vertices can snap to nearby plan geometry.
On iOS, use Settings → Snap Settings to control flooring snapping behavior.
If necessary, zoom in before repositioning the vertex.
Adding a Vertex
Add a vertex when the Flooring Area needs an additional corner.
Web
Enter Flooring Mode.
Select the Flooring Area.
Locate the midpoint control on the flooring edge.
Select the midpoint to insert a new vertex.
Drag the new vertex into position.
iPhone & iPad
Enter Flooring Mode.
Select the Flooring Area.
Tap the desired edge midpoint to insert a vertex.
Drag the new vertex into position.
Use additional vertices when the actual flooring boundary changes direction.
Removing a Vertex
Remove a vertex when an extra corner is no longer needed.
Web
Select the Flooring Area.
Locate the vertex you want to remove.
Right-click the vertex.
Delete the vertex.
On a touch-enabled Web device, double-tap the vertex.
Flex will not remove a vertex if doing so would leave the Flooring Area with fewer than three vertices.
iPhone & iPad
Select and edit the Flooring Area using the available vertex controls.
If removing or merging vertices would leave fewer than three valid vertices, the Flooring Area cannot remain as a valid polygon.
Dividing a Flooring Area with Floor Cut
Use Floor Cut when one Flooring Area needs to become two separate areas.
Common examples include:
Hardwood transitioning to tile
Carpet transitioning to LVP
Entryway flooring within a larger room
Partial flooring replacement
Shower or bathroom flooring transitions
Irregular flooring transitions
Cutting a Flooring Area on iPhone or iPad
In Flex 3.0.3, Floor Cut uses a drag-to-cut workflow and supports both straight and multi-segment cuts.
Create a Straight Cut
Enter Flooring Mode.
Select the Flooring Area you want to divide.
Select Floor Cut.
Press on one boundary of the Flooring Area.
Drag across the Flooring Area.
Release on another boundary.
If the cut is valid, Flex divides the original Flooring Area into two areas.
Create a Multi-Segment Cut
Use a multi-segment cut when the flooring transition needs to turn a corner.
Select Floor Cut.
Press on the Flooring Area boundary.
Drag into the interior of the Flooring Area.
Release inside the Flooring Area to establish the first segment.
Continue dragging from that endpoint to create another segment.
Repeat if additional segments are required.
Finish the cut on the Flooring Area boundary.
The cut is committed when the connected path successfully reaches the boundary.
This allows Floor Cut to create angled, L-shaped, U-shaped, and other multi-segment divisions instead of requiring one straight cut.
Floor Cut Snapping
Floor Cut can use angle snapping while you draw.
To change this behavior on iOS:
Open Settings.
Open Snap Settings.
Find Cut Angles.
Turn the setting on or off as needed.
Dividing a Flooring Area on Web
To divide an area on Web:
Enter Flooring Mode.
Select the Flooring Area.
Choose Divide Flooring Area.
Select the first point along the perimeter.
Select the second point along the perimeter.
Review the resulting Flooring Areas.
The two points define the cut through the selected Flooring Area.
If the proposed cut cannot create two valid polygons, Flex does not complete the division.
Undoing a Flooring Cut
If a cut produces the wrong result, use Undo immediately after the operation.
Undo restores the Flooring Area to its state before the cut.
Editing Flooring Around Interior Walls
On iOS, Flooring Areas can extend across interior walls, interior wall stubs, island walls, and Room Dividers.
The exterior shell continues to constrain the Flooring Area, but interior partitions do not have to become flooring boundaries.
This is useful when the same flooring runs continuously through multiple rooms or across interior partitions.
Understanding Flooring Deductions and Exclusions
A Flooring Area’s outer boundary does not necessarily equal its final installable area.
RENDR can account for geometry inside the Flooring Area that should not contribute to the flooring quantity.
On iOS, interior wall footprints located within a Flooring Area are automatically deducted from the flooring calculation. These deductions are reflected in the flooring display and calculated area.
Depending on the object and workflow, other permanent features can also be excluded from flooring calculations.
When reviewing a Flooring Area, check the available flooring values, including:
Value | Meaning |
Gross Area | Total area within the Flooring Area boundary |
Excluded Area | Area removed from the flooring calculation |
Net Install Area | Flooring area remaining after applicable exclusions |
These values update as the Flooring Area changes.
Excluding an Object from Flooring
On supported workflows, objects occupying permanent floor space can be excluded from the flooring calculation.
Select the applicable object.
Open its available properties or Attributes.
Enable the flooring exclusion option when available.
Return to the Flooring Area.
Review the updated flooring quantity.
Not every object needs to be excluded. Use exclusions when the object represents space where flooring will not be installed.
Troubleshooting Floor Cut
The Cut Won’t Start
Check that:
You are in Flooring Mode.
Floor Cut is active.
You are starting the cut on the boundary of a valid Flooring Area.
The Cut Won’t Finish
For a completed cut, the connected cut path must ultimately reach the Flooring Area boundary.
If you’re creating a multi-segment cut, releasing inside the area creates another segment—it does not complete the cut.
Continue the connected path until it reaches the boundary.
The Cut Created the Wrong Shape
Use Undo, then repeat the cut.
For complex transitions, use multiple connected segments rather than trying to create the entire boundary with one straight cut.
The Cut Is Snapping to the Wrong Angle
On iOS:
Settings → Snap Settings → Cut Angles
Turn Cut Angles off if you need to position the cut without angle snapping.
Troubleshooting Boundary Editing
I Can’t Select the Flooring Area
Confirm you’re in Flooring Mode.
Exit any active Flooring tool if you’re trying to return to normal selection.
Tap or click inside the desired Flooring Area.
A Vertex Won’t Move Where I Want It
Zoom into the area.
Check whether the vertex is snapping to nearby geometry.
Review the applicable Snap Settings.
Confirm the move won’t create invalid flooring geometry.
My Flooring Quantity Changed
This is expected after edits that change the flooring geometry.
The quantity can change when you:
Move a flooring boundary
Add or remove vertices
Divide an area
Merge areas
Add or change exclusions
Change geometry that creates an applicable flooring deduction
Review the resulting Flooring Area and its calculated values after editing.
Quick Reference
I want to… | Use… |
Change the outside shape | Drag flooring vertices |
Add another corner | Insert a vertex |
Remove an unnecessary corner | Remove a vertex |
Split one area into two | Floor Cut / Divide Flooring Area |
Create an irregular split on iOS | Multi-segment Floor Cut |
Combine adjacent areas | Merge Areas |
Keep flooring continuous across rooms | Merge Areas |
Remove non-floorable space from quantity | Flooring exclusions/deductions |
Fix a mistake | Undo |
Best Practices
💡 Edit the flooring, not the Room. Changing a Room is not necessary just because the flooring installation changes.
💡 Use Floor Cut for transitions. If the flooring material changes inside an existing area, divide the Flooring Area instead of changing the room geometry.
💡 Use multi-segment cuts for irregular transitions. On iOS, you can turn corners before completing the cut.
💡 Merge rather than redraw. If the same flooring continues across multiple generated areas, use Merge Areas instead of manually recreating the entire flooring boundary.
💡 Check the quantity after editing. Flooring calculations respond to changes in flooring geometry and applicable deductions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I split one Flooring Area into two?
Use Floor Cut on iOS or Divide Flooring Area on Web.
Can a flooring cut turn a corner?
Yes on iOS in Flex 3.0.3. Release inside the Flooring Area to create a segment, continue the connected cut, and finish on the boundary.
How do I combine Flooring Areas instead of dividing them?
Use Merge Areas on iPhone or iPad. See Managing Continuous Flooring Across Multiple Rooms.
Can flooring extend across an interior wall?
Yes on iOS. Interior walls do not have to constrain the Flooring Area. Their applicable footprints are deducted from the flooring calculation.
Why did my flooring square footage change after editing?
RENDR recalculates flooring quantities when the Flooring Area’s geometry, divisions, merges, exclusions, or applicable deductions change.
How do I stop Floor Cut from snapping to an angle?
On iOS, open Settings → Snap Settings → Cut Angles and turn Cut Angles off.
