Understanding Offline Scanning with RENDR

This article addresses potential issues while scanning "offline".

One of the biggest advantages of RENDR is that you don’t need an internet connection to capture or edit a project.

Whether you’re scanning a basement with poor reception, working in a new construction site without Wi-Fi, or remodeling in a remote location, RENDR is designed to keep working.

Understanding how RENDR saves your work—and when it syncs to the cloud—can help you confidently work offline and know when your project is fully backed up.

How RENDR Saves Your Work

When you finish capturing a scan, RENDR immediately saves the project to your device.

This happens before the project is uploaded to the cloud.

That means:

  • You do not need an internet connection to complete a scan.

  • Your project is safely stored on your device immediately after capture.

  • If you’re offline, RENDR will simply wait until a connection becomes available before uploading your work.

Think of it as a two-step process:

  1. Save to your device (immediate)

  2. Upload to the cloud (automatic when possible)

Working Offline

You can continue working even without an internet connection.

While offline you can:

  • Capture new spaces

  • Review floor plans

  • Edit projects in Flex

  • Add photos

  • Add markup and notes

  • Continue making changes to existing projects

Everything you do is saved locally on your device.

Once your device reconnects to the internet, RENDR automatically begins uploading any work that hasn’t yet synced to the cloud.

When RENDR Syncs

RENDR automatically checks for changes and syncs them to the cloud whenever possible.

Syncing typically occurs:

  • Immediately after saving a scan

  • After saving edits in Flex

  • After adding photos

  • When you open the app

  • When you return to RENDR from another app

  • When your internet connection is restored

  • When you pull down to refresh your project list

Most of the time, you don’t need to do anything—RENDR handles synchronization automatically.

Continue Working While Uploading

Uploading doesn’t prevent you from working.

You can continue:

  • Editing floor plans

  • Adding photos

  • Creating markup

  • Renaming projects

  • Making other changes

If additional changes are made while a project is uploading, RENDR will continue syncing the newest version automatically.

For very large projects or projects with many photos, it’s best to keep the app open in the foreground until syncing completes. This helps prevent iOS from pausing the upload before it’s finished.

Understanding Local vs. Cloud Storage

It’s important to understand the difference between a project being saved and backed up.

Saved Locally

Immediately after capture or editing, your work is saved on your device.

If you’re offline, this is completely normal and your work is safe on that device.

Backed Up to the Cloud

Once an internet connection is available, RENDR uploads your project to the cloud.

After syncing finishes, your project is available:

  • In the RENDR Web App

  • On your other signed-in devices

  • For your teammates (if shared)

The cloud status icon next to each project lets you know whether that upload has finished.

For more information about cloud icons and sync status, see Troubleshooting Syncing to the Cloud.

Before Logging Out or Deleting the App

Until a project has finished syncing to the cloud, your device is the only place that project exists.

Before you:

  • Sign out

  • Switch accounts

  • Replace your device

  • Delete the RENDR app

make sure your important projects have finished syncing.

Important: Deleting the app before a project has synced will permanently remove any unsynced data stored on that device.

If You Logged Out Before a Scan Finished Syncing

Don’t panic.

If the scan was never uploaded but still exists on the original device, you can usually recover it by:

  1. Signing back into the same RENDR account that created the scan.

  2. Using the same iPhone or iPad that originally captured it.

As long as the app hasn’t been deleted and the local data is still present, RENDR can continue syncing the project once you’re signed back in and connected to the internet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I scan without internet?

Yes. Capturing and editing projects works without an internet connection.

Your work will upload automatically once you’re back online.

Can I edit a project before it finishes uploading?

Yes.

You can continue editing while RENDR uploads your project. Any new changes will also sync automatically.

Why doesn’t my project appear on the web yet?

Projects only appear in the cloud after they’ve finished uploading.

If you’re offline—or the upload is still in progress—you may need to wait until syncing completes.

Should I keep the app open while uploading?

For most projects, syncing finishes quickly.

For larger scans or projects with many photos, it’s recommended to leave RENDR open in the foreground until the upload completes.

Will I lose my scan if I lose internet during capture?

No.

Your project is saved locally first. If your connection drops, RENDR simply waits until you’re back online before uploading.

When should I contact RENDR Support?

If a project doesn’t finish syncing after several minutes, even with a reliable internet connection, or if it appears stuck after trying the recommended troubleshooting steps, contact RENDR Support at [email protected].
