1: Saving RENDR XML Files to Your Computer
Save the .xml file exported from RENDR to your computer. This can happen in two ways:
Automatically saved by your web browser (usually goes to the Downloads folder by default)
Or, choose to save the file manually when prompted (you can select a more organized location like a customer folder or project folder where you keep your files).
2. First Time Setup: Resetting How Your Computer Recognizes .XML Files
When you open the .xml file for the first time after exporting from RENDR, Windows may default to opening it as a web document (usually opening in Microsoft Edge or another web browser). To fix this permanently:
Navigate to the folder where you saved the .xml file.
Right-click the .xml file.
Choose Open With > Choose Another App.
Select Notepad (or another plain text editor like Notepad++).
Check the box Always use this app to open .xml files.
Click OK.
This action tells Windows to always open .xml files as text documents instead of web files, which ensures the file remains correctly recognized as XML.
3. From Now On: Importing the XML File Correctly
After setting the default application to a text editor, your system will now recognize .xml files properly. Follow these steps to import the .xml file into 2020 or similar design software:
Open your design software (e.g., 2020).
Select the Import option and choose Local Storage (or equivalent).
In the file dialog, set the Files of Type filter to Vertex XML (or the appropriate XML file type).
Navigate to your saved .xml file.
Select the file and proceed to import it.
Here’s a guided tutorial on the 2020 import process.
The software will now recognize the file as an XML file and import it correctly into your project.
