Overview

Not every room is separated by a physical wall.

Open-concept homes often contain spaces that function as separate rooms without walls between them.

Common examples include:

  • Kitchen and Dining Room

  • Dining Room and Family Room

  • Entry and Living Room

  • Hallways opening into larger spaces

  • Loft spaces

  • Great rooms

Although these spaces are visually connected, you may still want them to be treated as separate rooms for:

  • Room names

  • Area calculations

  • Measurements

  • Flooring

  • Takeoffs

  • Exports

That’s exactly what Room Dividers are designed to do.

If someone can walk from one space to another without passing through a wall or framed opening, a Room Divider is often the better choice.


What Is a Room Divider?

A Room Divider is a non-physical boundary that tells Flex where one room ends and another begins.

Unlike a standard wall, a Room Divider does not represent framing or finished construction. Instead, it helps Flex recognize separate rooms while preserving the open nature of the floor plan.

Room Dividers are ideal whenever you need independent rooms without adding construction that doesn’t exist.

Room Dividers work well for:

  • Open-concept kitchens

  • Great rooms

  • Breakfast nooks

  • Dining areas

  • Open foyers

  • Hall transitions

  • Loft spaces

They’re especially useful whenever you need separate room names, measurements, or takeoffs while preserving an open floor plan.


Why We Built Room Dividers

Contractors estimate rooms.

Designers think in rooms.

Homeowners describe rooms.

Modern homes, however, don’t always have walls separating those spaces.

Rather than forcing users to choose between inaccurate room calculations or drawing walls that don’t exist, Flex allows you to define rooms independently from physical construction.


Creating a Room Divider

To create a Room Divider:

  1. Switch to Layout mode.

  2. Select the Room Divider tool.

  3. Click (Web) or tap (iPhone/iPad) where the divider should begin.

  4. Drag toward the desired endpoint.

  5. Release to create the Room Divider.

Like standard walls, Room Dividers are drawn one segment at a time.

The Room Divider tool remains active after each divider is created, allowing you to continue drawing additional dividers until you switch back to the Select tool.


Connecting Room Dividers

For the best room detection, Room Dividers should connect cleanly to surrounding geometry.

As you draw, Flex automatically snaps to nearby walls, corners, and other Room Dividers whenever possible.

You may see snap indicators showing that the divider will connect to:

  • An existing wall corner

  • An existing wall endpoint

  • The middle of another wall to create a T-junction

  • Another Room Divider to create additional room boundaries

Room Dividers can connect to one another to create enclosed shapes or more complex room layouts. This is especially useful when defining spaces that don’t align with existing walls, such as:

  • Walk-in showers

  • Shower enclosures

  • Closets

  • Utility spaces

  • Irregularly shaped rooms

  • Open areas with custom room boundaries

Wait for the intended snap indicator before releasing the divider.

Properly connected Room Dividers produce cleaner room boundaries and more reliable room detection.

💡Pro Tip: Room Dividers don’t have to connect only to physical walls. Connecting multiple Room Dividers together allows you to create enclosed polygons wherever additional room definition is needed.

💡Pro Tip: Zoom in before making complex connections. Even small gaps between walls or Room Dividers can prevent Flex from detecting rooms correctly.


What Changes After Adding a Room Divider?

Once connected, Flex immediately recalculates the surrounding room layout.

Depending on your project, you may notice:

  • New rooms are detected.

  • Existing rooms become separate spaces.

  • Room areas recalculate.

  • Room names can be assigned independently.

  • Measurements update automatically.

The physical wall layout does not change.

Only the room boundaries used by Flex are updated.


Room Dividers and Flooring

Room Dividers are especially useful when flooring and room boundaries don’t match.

For example, an open-concept kitchen, dining room, and family room may all share the same hardwood flooring while still being treated as three separate rooms.

Room Dividers make this possible.

Room boundaries and flooring areas are managed independently.

A single flooring material can span multiple rooms, or individual flooring areas can be created and edited separately when needed.

💡 Pro Tip: Think of Room Dividers as organizing spaces rather than construction. They define rooms without changing the physical layout of the home.

When you’re unsure, ask yourself:

“Would someone have to pass through a wall or framed opening to move between these spaces?”

If the answer is no, a Room Divider is often the better choice.


Editing Room Dividers

Room Dividers behave much like standard walls.

You can:

  • Move them

  • Adjust their endpoints

  • Reposition them

  • Delete them

Like walls, Room Dividers participate in room detection, so moving one immediately updates nearby room boundaries.

Unlike physical walls, Room Dividers cannot host doors, windows, or openings.


If Rooms Don’t Split

If adding a Room Divider doesn’t create a new room:

✔ Zoom in and inspect both endpoints.

✔ Verify both ends are connected to surrounding geometry.

✔ Make sure the divider reaches nearby walls instead of stopping just short.

✔ Confirm there isn’t another opening that still connects the two spaces.

Most room detection issues are caused by incomplete connections rather than the Room Divider itself.


Best Practices

  • Use Room Dividers only when you need independent rooms without physical construction.

  • Connect both ends of every Room Divider.

  • Add Room Dividers before generating flooring whenever possible.

  • Review room names immediately after creating new room boundaries.

  • Zoom in before creating T-junctions or complex connections.

  • Don’t use Room Dividers simply to organize your drawing—they should represent meaningful room boundaries.

Drawing a Wall Instead

Walls represent physical construction.

Room Dividers define spaces.

Using a wall where no construction exists can affect room calculations, takeoffs, and exports.


Leaving Tiny Gaps

Like walls, Room Dividers must connect cleanly to surrounding geometry.

Even small gaps can prevent Flex from recognizing separate rooms.


Creating Too Many Room Dividers

Not every open area needs to become a separate room.

Only divide spaces that you’ll reference during estimating, design, documentation, or production.


Frequently Asked Questions

Will Room Dividers appear as walls?

No.

Room Dividers define room boundaries without representing physical construction. Depending on the current view and output, they may be displayed differently than standard walls because they are intended to organize spaces rather than represent framing.


Can flooring continue across a Room Divider?

Yes.

Room boundaries and flooring areas are managed independently. One flooring material may span multiple rooms, or separate flooring areas may be created wherever needed.


Can I convert a Room Divider into a Wall?

Yes.

If a Room Divider later becomes a physical wall, you don’t need to redraw it.

  1. Select the Room Divider.

  2. Click the green Convert to Wall indicator that appears beside the selected divider.

  3. In the confirmation dialog, click Turn Into Wall.

Flex converts the Room Divider into a standard wall while preserving its existing position and geometry.

This is especially useful when remodeling plans evolve and a conceptual room boundary becomes actual construction.

💡 Pro Tip: Converting a Room Divider preserves its location, making it much faster than deleting the divider and drawing a new wall.


Can I delete a Room Divider later?

Absolutely.

Deleting a Room Divider removes that room boundary. If no other walls or Room Dividers separate the adjacent spaces, Flex automatically merges the rooms based on the surrounding geometry.
