Field Notes is a powerful documentation tool built directly into the RENDR app that allows contractors and designers to capture critical jobsite context alongside their scans. It replaces traditional pencil-and-paper note taking with a structured, digital workflow that lives inside the scanned space itself.
Rather than relying on memory, photos, or loose sketches, Field Notes ensures that the details that matter most in design and estimation are preserved, visible, and shareable across your entire team.
Why Field Notes Matter
While RENDR’s LiDAR scanning captures geometry and layout, Field Notes is a way to capture conversation highlights, job site constraints and critical dimensions that scanning alone cannot.
Field Notes are designed to bridge the gap between the site visit and the final proposal by allowing you to:
Digitize the Entire Field Workflow
Eliminate clipboards, graph paper, and disconnected notes. Everything is stored directly in the digital project file.
Capture What LiDAR Can’t
Document outlet locations, registers, bulkhead projections, obstructions, appliance constraints, and client-specific requests—especially critical in kitchens, baths, and remodels.
Reduce Office Guesswork
Designers, estimators, and project managers can see exactly what was observed in the field, improving accuracy and reducing costly clarification loops.
Create a Single Source of Truth
Notes stay attached to the space and move with it—across devices, exports, integrations, and APIs.
Need that first measure to be the ONLY measure? typically, LiDAR will be accurate to within an inch, but you know as well as we do that cabinets and windows require more.
Document those critical dimensions in Field Notes so that you can adjust to perfection in your CAD software, or reference later when ordering cabinets.
How to Access Field Notes
Field Notes are accessible in multiple intuitive ways, both during and after a scan.
Option 1: Notes Tab
Scan Your Space using the RENDR iOS app.
After the scan completes, you’ll land on the Space Overview screen.
Tap the Notes tab to open the Field Notes interface.
Option 2: Floor Plan Shortcut
From the interactive floor plan, tap the blue pencil icon to jump directly into Field Notes and begin marking up the space.
Both access points open the same Field Notes layer, ensuring notes are always easy to reach in the field.
How to Use Field Notes
Once inside Field Notes, you can annotate directly on top of your scanned plan with a combination of text, drawings, and visual markers.
Add Text Notes
Document finish selections, client requests, assumptions, or special conditions.
Notes stay spatially associated with the plan for easy reference later.
Draw Directly on the Plan
Circle areas of concern
Highlight walls or features
Sketch clarifications where needed
Use Blueprint Icons (Visual Callouts)
Blueprint icons allow you to visually flag important conditions directly on the floor plan.
How to use them:
Tap the Blueprint icon in the Field Notes toolbar.
Place icons on the plan to mark items such as:
Electrical outlets and switches
Registers or vents
Plumbing fixtures
Centerlines
Customize icon size, color, and orientation to improve clarity.
These visual callouts make it immediately obvious what the office team needs to pay attention to—without reading through paragraphs of notes.
Exporting & Sharing Field Notes
Field Notes are designed to move seamlessly through your workflow—from field to office to downstream systems.
Available Everywhere
iOS App: Capture and review notes in the field
Web App: View and reference notes back at the office
API Access: Programmatically retrieve Field Notes data
Native Integrations: Automatically available in connected platforms
Export Options
Export Field Notes as a document (typically PDF) from both iOS and Web
Share via email or store alongside other project documentation
Integrations
Field Notes are natively supported in RENDR integrations, including:
JobTread
Buildxact
This ensures notes follow the project into estimating, design, and project management tools without manual re-entry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use Field Notes for details the scan might have missed?
A: Yes. This is one of the primary use cases. Field Notes are ideal for documenting bulkheads, return vents, appliance constraints, or any condition that LiDAR alone may not capture perfectly.
Q: Can I add notes directly from the floor plan view?
A: Yes. Tap the blue pencil icon on the floor plan to instantly access Field Notes and begin marking up the space.
Q: Are Field Notes available outside the iPad app?
A: Yes. Field Notes are accessible on iOS, the web, through the RENDR API, and via native integrations like JobTread and Buildxact.
Q: Can my team see the notes I take in the field?
A: Absolutely. Because notes are saved to the space, anyone with access to the project—through the web app or integrated platforms—can view them when preparing designs or proposals.
Q: Do I need an internet connection to use Field Notes?
A: RENDR supports offline scanning. You can capture spaces and add Field Notes without an active connection, and everything will sync once you reconnect.
Q: Can I mark up Field Notes from the web?
A: Currently, the ability to edit Field Notes is only supported on the mobile app (iPhone and iPad).
