Overview

Flex automatically displays many measurements generated from the floor plan.

Custom Dimensions allow you to add additional reference measurements when you want to call attention to a specific distance or condition.

Custom Dimensions can be useful for documenting:

  • Clearances

  • Passage widths

  • Fixture locations

  • Installation reference points

  • Offsets between plan features

  • Measurements that are not already displayed automatically

Custom Dimensions are part of the Markup layer.

They do not change:

  • Walls

  • Rooms

  • Flooring Areas

  • Doors, windows, or openings

  • Objects

  • Calculated room geometry

RENDR Principle

Use automatic dimensions to understand modeled geometry. Use Custom Dimensions to call attention to measurements that matter to the project.

Before You Begin

Custom Dimensions are created and edited in the RENDR iOS app on iPhone and iPad.

In Flex 3.0, existing Custom Dimensions can be viewed on Web, but Web does not provide tools to create or edit them.

Opening the Custom Dimension Tool

On iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open the Space in Flex.

  2. Switch to Markup Mode.

  3. Choose Custom Dimensions.

  4. Create the dimension using one of the supported placement methods.

Custom Dimensions are managed within their own annotation category in Markup Mode.

Adding a Custom Dimension

You can create a Custom Dimension using either of two methods:

Method 1: Tap Two Points

  1. Open Custom Dimensions in Markup Mode.

  2. Tap the first measurement point.

  3. Tap the second measurement point.

  4. Review the completed dimension.

  5. Reposition the label if needed.

Method 2: Press, Drag, and Release

  1. Open Custom Dimensions in Markup Mode.

  2. Press at the first measurement point.

  3. Drag toward the second measurement point.

  4. Release at the desired location.

  5. Review the completed dimension.

Both methods create the same type of Custom Dimension.

Understanding Endpoint Snapping

Custom Dimension endpoints look for nearby reference geometry as you place or reposition them.

Endpoints can snap to:

  • Corners

  • Edges

  • Faces

Snapping helps position the endpoint directly on the intended plan reference.

The feature inventory does not describe Custom Dimensions as permanently attached to the underlying geometry. Review the dimension after making later floor-plan edits to confirm that it still communicates the intended measurement.

Placing Endpoints Accurately

To place an endpoint precisely:

  1. Zoom in on the area you want to measure.

  2. Move the endpoint close to the intended corner, edge, or face.

  3. Allow Flex to apply the available snap.

  4. Complete or release the endpoint.

  5. Review the resulting measurement.

Zooming in makes it easier to distinguish between nearby snap targets.

Using Angle Snapping

Custom Dimensions can snap to 5-degree angle increments.

This can help keep horizontal, vertical, and angled dimensions visually consistent.

To change the angle-snapping setting:

  1. Open Settings in the iOS editor.

  2. Locate Dimension Angles.

  3. Turn the setting on or off.

  4. Return to Markup Mode.

  5. Create or reposition the Custom Dimension.

Use angle snapping when you want the dimension line to follow regular angle increments.

Turn it off when the endpoints should remain at their exact selected locations without angle correction.

Moving a Dimension Endpoint

Move an endpoint when the dimension begins or ends at the wrong location.

  1. Open Markup Mode.

  2. Choose Custom Dimensions.

  3. Select the existing Custom Dimension.

  4. Drag the endpoint that needs to be corrected.

  5. Move it toward the intended corner, edge, or face.

  6. Release it at the desired location.

  7. Review the updated measurement.

Moving an endpoint changes the distance represented by the Custom Dimension.

Moving the Dimension Label

The dimension label can be repositioned independently from the endpoints.

To move the label:

  1. Open Custom Dimensions in Markup Mode.

  2. Select the existing dimension.

  3. Drag the measurement label.

  4. Move it away from walls, symbols, text, or other overlapping information.

  5. Release it at the desired location.

Moving the label changes only where the measurement is displayed.

It does not change the endpoint locations or the measured distance.

Deleting a Custom Dimension

To remove a Custom Dimension:

  1. Open Markup Mode.

  2. Choose Custom Dimensions.

  3. Select the dimension you want to remove.

  4. Tap Trash.

With a connected hardware keyboard, you can also press:

  • Delete

  • Backspace

Only the selected Custom Dimension is removed.

Reviewing Custom Dimensions

Custom Dimensions have their own annotation panel.

Use the panel to:

  • Review all Custom Dimensions

  • Focus the canvas on a specific dimension

  • Delete an individual dimension

  • Use Clear All to remove all Custom Dimensions

The Clear All action applies only to the Custom Dimensions category.

It does not remove Freehand, Symbols, Pinned Notes, or Text.

Showing or Hiding Custom Dimensions

Custom Dimensions can be shown or hidden from Layers.

To hide them:

  1. Open Layers.

  2. Find Custom Dimensions.

  3. Turn the layer off.

To display them again:

  1. Open Layers.

  2. Turn Custom Dimensions back on.

Hiding the layer does not delete the dimensions.

Layer visibility is saved on the device.

Undo and Redo

Use Undo when you accidentally create, move, or delete a Custom Dimension.

To reverse an action:

  1. Tap Undo in the navigation controls.

  2. Continue tapping Undo to reverse additional available actions.

To restore an undone action:

  1. Tap Redo.

Hardware keyboard shortcuts:

  • Command + Z — Undo

  • Command + Shift + Z — Redo

Undo and Redo are unavailable in View Mode.

Automatic Dimensions vs. Custom Dimensions

Automatic Dimensions

Automatic dimensions are generated from modeled floor-plan geometry.

Depending on the selected feature or editing context, they may display measurements associated with:

  • Walls

  • Doors

  • Windows

  • Openings

  • Selected plan features

Some automatic dimension labels may also act as editing controls.

Custom Dimensions

Custom Dimensions are intentionally added by the user.

They:

  • Live in the Markup layer

  • Call attention to a specific reference measurement

  • Can have their endpoints repositioned

  • Allow the label to be moved independently

  • Do not move walls

  • Do not resize objects

  • Do not change room calculations

  • Can be shown or hidden from Layers

Returning to Floor-Plan Editing

When you are finished working with Custom Dimensions:

  1. Switch to Layout Mode to edit walls, doors, windows, openings, Room Dividers, or objects.

  2. Switch to Flooring Mode to edit Flooring Areas or exclusions.

  3. Switch to View Mode to inspect the plan without editing.

Custom Dimensions document the plan.

They do not replace Layout or Flooring tools.

Platform Notes

iPhone

Custom Dimension creation and editing are supported.

You can:

  • Create dimensions with two taps

  • Create dimensions with press-drag-release

  • Reposition either endpoint

  • Move the label

  • Delete dimensions

  • Show or hide the Custom Dimensions layer

Zoom in before working in crowded areas.

iPad

The same Custom Dimension workflow is supported on iPad.

Annotation controls appear in a collapsible slide panel.

The larger display can make precise endpoint placement and label positioning easier.

Web

Custom Dimensions created in the iOS app can be displayed on Web.

In Flex 3.0, Custom Dimensions are view-only on Web.

Web does not allow users to:

  • Create Custom Dimensions

  • Move endpoints

  • Reposition labels

  • Delete Custom Dimensions

  • Edit Custom Dimensions

Open the Space in the RENDR iOS app to make changes.

Best Practices

💡 Zoom in before placing endpoints near closely spaced geometry.

💡 Move endpoints close to the intended corner, edge, or face so Flex can apply the available snap.

💡 Keep angle snapping enabled when you want clean, regular dimension angles.

💡 Move the label instead of an endpoint when the measurement is correct but difficult to read.

💡 Review Custom Dimensions after making major floor-plan edits.

💡 Add only the reference measurements that help someone estimate, design, review, or build the project.

Support Clues

Problem

Recommended Action

The endpoint will not snap where I expect.

Zoom in and move it closer to the intended corner, edge, or face. Confirm that Dimension Angles are configured appropriately in Settings.

The dimension starts or ends in the wrong place.

Select the dimension and drag the incorrect endpoint to a new location.

The measurement is correct, but the label covers the plan.

Drag the label without moving either endpoint.

The dimension angle keeps changing.

Open Settings and turn Dimension Angles off before repositioning or creating the dimension.

I cannot find a Custom Dimension.

Confirm that Custom Dimensions are visible in Layers, then use the Custom Dimensions annotation panel to focus on the item.

I deleted the wrong dimension.

Use Undo immediately.

I cannot edit the dimension on Web.

Open the Space in the RENDR iOS app. Web markup is view-only in Flex 3.0.
