Overview

Doors, windows, and openings are wall-hosted features in Flex.

When placed on a physical wall, they remain associated with that wall so Flex can maintain their relationship as the surrounding wall geometry changes.

As walls are edited, Flex automatically attempts to preserve the position of hosted doors, windows, and openings whenever possible, reducing the amount of manual cleanup required during layout changes.

Why We Built It

Wall layouts frequently change throughout the design and estimating process.

If every wall edit required recreating every door and window, editing would become slow and repetitive.

Instead, Flex keeps wall features associated with their host wall whenever possible, allowing you to refine your floor plan without repeatedly rebuilding the same openings.

Understanding Wall Features

Flex supports three wall-hosted feature types.

Door

Represents a standard doorway.

Doors remain attached to their host wall and participate in dimensions, elevations, and exports.

Window

Represents a window opening within a wall.

Windows can be positioned, resized, and edited while remaining associated with their host wall.

Opening

Represents an opening without a door, such as an open passageway between rooms.

Openings are edited using the same workflow as doors and windows.

Adding a Door, Window, or Opening

To place a new wall feature:

  1. Switch to Layout mode.

  2. Open the Walls & Features toolbox.

  3. Select Door, Window, or Opening.

  4. Click (Web) or tap (iPhone/iPad) a physical wall where you want to place the feature.

Flex places the feature on the selected wall near the location you clicked or tapped.

If necessary, Flex automatically adjusts the feature’s width so it fits within the available wall segment.

The object is automatically selected when placed, allowing you to resize directly by dragging the handles on the sides of the object on the floor plan, or in the attributes panel on the right hand side.

Repeated Placement

After placing a feature, the selected tool remains active.

This allows you to quickly place multiple doors, windows, or openings without reselecting the tool each time.

Continue selecting additional walls until you’re finished, then return to the Select tool.

If Flex Won’t Place a Feature

Flex may prevent placement if:

  • The selected surface is not a physical wall.

  • The wall is too short.

  • Another wall feature already occupies that location.

  • There isn’t enough available wall space.

If placement fails, adjust the surrounding wall geometry or choose another location before trying again.

Moving a Door, Window, or Opening

Select the feature you want to edit.

Web

Drag the on-plan movement control to slide the feature along its existing host wall.

The feature remains attached to that wall.

iPhone & iPad

Drag the movement handle to slide the feature along its wall.

You can also drag the feature away from its current wall, move it through open space, and snap it onto another physical wall.

💡Pro Tip: Zoom in before making small adjustments. It’s much easier to align wall features accurately when working at a comfortable zoom level.

Resizing a Wall Feature

Doors, windows, and openings can be resized directly on the floor plan.

Web

Drag either endpoint handle to adjust the width of the selected feature.

iPhone & iPad

Drag either endpoint handle to resize the selected feature while it remains attached to its wall.

Flex automatically prevents features from overlapping one another or extending beyond the available wall.

Editing Measurements Directly on the Plan

Many wall feature measurements can be edited directly without dragging.

The available measurements differ slightly by platform.

Web

Click the editable centerline distance measurement.

Enter the new value and press Enter.

To edit width, height, or sill height, use the Attributes Panel.

Press Escape before committing to cancel the edit.

iPhone & iPad

Tap an available editable measurement.

Depending on the selected feature, this may include:

  • Width

  • Centerline distance

  • Distance from the feature to a nearby wall

Enter the new value using the numeric keypad, then tap Done.

Editing from the Attributes Panel

Selecting a door, window, or opening opens its Attributes Panel.

Depending on the platform, editable fields may include:

  • Width

  • Height

  • Sill Height (windows)

Changes are applied immediately after the edit is committed.

The Attributes Panel does not currently support adding a hinge direction, swing direction, side orientation, or moving a feature to another wall.

Automatic Dimension Updates

As you move or resize a door, window, or opening, Flex automatically updates the displayed measurements.

This allows you to verify spacing and positioning without manually recreating dimensions after every edit.

Editing Walls After Placement

One of Flex’s biggest advantages is that wall features remain associated with their host wall whenever possible.

If you later edit the wall, Flex automatically attempts to preserve the position of hosted doors, windows, and openings as the wall geometry changes.

This helps reduce the amount of repositioning required after making wall edits.

If Something Doesn’t Look Right

If a wall feature isn’t behaving as expected:

✔ Confirm it’s attached to the intended wall.

✔ Verify the wall is connected correctly.

✔ Make sure there’s enough available wall length.

✔ Zoom in and inspect nearby geometry.

✔ Review the displayed measurements after making edits.

Best Practices

  • Complete major wall edits before placing large numbers of doors and windows.

  • Use direct measurement editing whenever exact dimensions are available.

  • Drag features for quick visual adjustments.

  • Enter measurements for precise placement.

  • Review wall feature locations before exporting or sharing your floor plan.

Common Mistakes

Placing Features Before Finalizing Wall Layout

Large wall changes made after placing many features may require additional adjustments.

Whenever practical, finish major wall edits before placing numerous doors and windows.

Dragging When You Already Know the Measurement

If you already know the correct measurement, entering it directly is usually faster and more accurate than dragging.

Correcting the Feature Instead of the Wall

If the wall geometry is incorrect, edit the wall first.

Doors, windows, and openings depend on accurate wall geometry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I type measurements instead of dragging?

Yes.

The available editable measurements depend on the platform.

  • Web: Edit the centerline position directly on the plan. Width, height, and sill height are edited from the Attributes Panel.

  • iPhone & iPad: Edit available on-plan measurements such as width, centerline distance, and distances to nearby walls.

Why won’t my door or window move any farther?

The feature has likely reached the available limits of its host wall or another nearby wall feature is preventing further movement.

Can I place a door on a Room Divider?

No.

Doors, windows, and openings can only be placed on physical walls.

Room Dividers cannot host wall features.

Why can’t I place two windows beside each other?

Flex prevents wall features from overlapping.

If there isn’t enough available wall space, reposition the existing feature or choose another location.

What happens if I move the wall later?

Flex automatically attempts to preserve the position of hosted doors, windows, and openings whenever wall geometry changes.
